Hello,
I am a member of SSCA and my family and I are planning a trip to Spain by Air but once we arrive there would like to visit the Balearic Islands and that is where I saw your area noted. I live in Aurora Colorado and keep my small sailboat on the water at a reservoir nearby during the spring, summer and fall. So we all like to sail. It appears you have done many voyages and have seen some pretty interesting sites. A very nice web site and I am not very good at understanding how they are built etc., however yours is great. Thank you for sharing. As we get closer on making our plans would it be ok to contact you for information?

Hi, Tni and David,

What a pleasant surprise when I looked you up on the internet today and found a brand new report! Beautifully written, I might add. I am envying the two of you as I sit here in the Boat Show press office and imagine you in your new found paradise. And it must be paradise if you compare it to Conception Island which is Paul and my favorite spot in the Bahamas. The pictures are terrific and it’s good to know you are still soaking in the sun and fun aboard Rosario.

The show is up and running and we’re being run ragged, well, Paul is, anyway. I have a cushy job in the Press trailer handing out badges and literature and enjoying the air conditioning. It’s very hot and humid here, and Paul is on call for anything that breaks or needs fixing or forklifting. He put in 84 hours this week.

We are counting the days (18 to be exact) until we fly back to Aurora and set sail again. Can’t wait! We will be so ready for some R&R when the shows are over and put to bed.

Keep enjoying the ride! It’s just great reading your updates.

Hi sailors, I just read your entire travel journal and pictures and felt like I had an exotic vacation. What a fabulous concept, amazing sites and experiences and great photos! I loved every minute of it. I know Joel is leaving Tues. to meet you in Spain, and shortly you’ll be on your way home — no regrets. I just got back from an Alaskan cruise for one week, 200 pitures, and partial deductions b/c I took some CEU’s on board! How about that! Marbella is lovely, from these photos, even the one with David splashed in eau de petrol.

Your concerns about the SPRAWL remind me of my parents’ adventure in 1974-75 when they relocated to Rio with the corporate overseas job. My mom asked me what she should take and what she should not (I was a young whippersnapper with lots of opinions), and I urged her not to take plastic bags. I was thinking of the environment even then. But of course when they arrived with minimal plastic, they found the place much overrun with plenty of plastic.

A return visit to Rio in the late 1970’s with a group of 19 of us for my brother and his bride’s honeymoon trip (yes, there’s a story or two there) saw some changes, but not monumental ones for those who had been there earlier. But a newcomer on seeing the skyline from the beachfront road kept repeating, “Just like Miami Beach, only more commercial”. This line has (in my family of origin) come to stand for a kind of rigidness, an inability to find uniqueness in a new experience, but also to comment on the SPRAWL wherever we find it.

P.S. Tomarrow night 9/7 is opening night of the Opera season so everything and everyone here is all stressed out!!! Can’t wait for it to be over. We’re celebrating Barnie Osher’s 80th birthday so I’ve been buried under getting all his guests seated and ball tickets sent.

Don’t know if you know, Luciano Pavarotti died last night, of pancreatic cancer. En of era. Well I guess I better get bsck to work.

Good to hear from you. I’m so excited for you and glad to know you have something to guide you out of the way of the shipping lanes!!! Hope the seas have been alot calmer after the great crossing.
Back here at the opera we’re getting ready for Opening Night on Fri. 9/7 with Samson and Delilah. Lots of changes and lots of new people.
As for me I now have a new title of (Medallion Society Conciege Manager). The old gal doesn’t have to jump up for the window any longer. I sit in my corner and just handle the Artist,Management, and the Medallion Society members with their ticket requests and reservations for dinner or Med-So lounge during intermissions. If I’ve told you this before please excuse me. I would rather be with you sailing any day. Take care of yourselves and keep in touch.

Following your travels is truly enjoyable. The tea factory sounded so interesting. And I’m wondering if you sampled any of the casseroles steamed by the geysers; it’s such an amazing phenomena.

Land Ho! Congrats on making your voyage across the Atlantic. Looks like it was quite a memorable crossing. So glad you are safe and sound on land again! ho love. I was SO happy to get your email and to learn I can write you out there in middle of the ocean. amazing. I’ll keep it short: I’m in ATL now, the conf. is going well and EVERYONE misses you. YES Summit was great, Naomi and Milano fabulous, I learned a lot from them. I go back to DC on Sun. but my dad won’t be home til I’m at the PTI so I’ll see him when I return on 6/21 to DC. So these are the simple details of my life I can share in this short msg. There is SO much more that I want to share but will wait til we get to talk. I will leave my cell phone on all of next week to get your call when you are on land…don’t be like we were in Columbia about calling!

According to the Oakland Zoo, David’s hypothesis is probably correct:

Feed on cryptic prey that are forced into showing themselves when flushed by grazing mammals. Grasshoppers are an important item in their food which also includes toads, tree-frogs, skinks, dragon flies, beetles, crickets, moths, termites and spiders. They are thought to feed on blood-sucking parasites of the larger hoofed mammals and are often seen riding on their backs, but it seems more likely that they are feeding on the insects stirred up. Cattle Egrets eat only a few ticks, and these are mainly engorged and recently dropped, rather than picked from the host. (end quote)

It’s been so bittersweet, hearing how much David and Tni are loving the island we have long loved. We knew it would happen. The sensibility that we love about them was a perfect fit for what is so wonderful about St. Barts..and they are so right on every level…..it’s a magical place with a spirit that is part gallic, part caribbean, and always fabulous. We almost feel like parents watching our kids step into a rite of passage…except that seems condescending and its anything but. We literally both started sighing on one occasion when we got one of Davids phone calls sharing the excitement. We will one day spend time there together. There just is no choice – start saving now! Watching the sun settting on St Jean Beach, eating (nay dining!) a fine french meal or laying on a perfect beach nude at Saline……you just have to experience it. There’s a reason the rich flock there.

We are still on-board Friday’s Child now in North Sound Virgin Gorda. Travel home delayed by a 1 week unexpected trip to New York to visit Pamela’s uncle who was critically ill. Decided to extend our trip by 2 weeks to compensate. (that was Charlie, it’s me now!) We have had the most wonderful sails, and time, here in the BVI’s. Finally having the kind of time we envisioned long before ironing out boat problems and family difficulties. the decison to return to the boat from NYC was a good one. We are doing just great and are thinking about you as you are about to embark on your trans Atlantic crossing. Will continue to keep up with you via your great site! And a word out to all of you wondering…..these two have a HOME here. Warm, clean, fast and exciting! On our end….we came from a day of missed connections and 3 minutes from the airport to find David hunched over a beer at a small bayside wooden table with his toes digging in sand at “De Loose Mangoose”.

A ride on MONTE (the dinghy!) took us out to a wide smiling TNI and so many hugs later……Lobster….wine and lots of catching up. You remember that dark night back in 82 when the Baltimore Colts in the dead of night moved the team to your beloved city of Indianapolis… But it wasn’t easy at first… you had to struggle through those tough 20 years before, finally, the Colts signed Peyton Manning. And then your situation turned around… at last… yes… after all those tough losses, tough nights tossing and turning… wondering if your Colts would ever get this chance… at last… you might get that Super Bowl ring that you have patiently waited for… for all those many, many tough years as a Colts fan… enjoy tomorrow – you truly deserve this day!

Just got your word that you’re in SW Puerto Rico! Whew. You are racing, people! We figure in about a week, we should be able to figure out where we’re flying to to meet up! I understand President’s week is VERY busy with Yachts in the Virgin Islands (both US and British). Don’t let any tourists bump into Rosario!

Thanks for keeping the blog up: at least some of us are tracking your moods and routes. And, Tni: congratulations on catching quite a birthday fish!

Here at Vinq HQ we’ve noticed that the weather in San Jose has been cooler (and windier) recently than in NYC. Swimming in warm Caribbean water sounds delightful.

Meanwhile, if you liked Junkanoo, plan to park somewhere in mid-February where there is an active Carnival event. One site with some dates and places is http://www.tntisland.com/other-carnivals.html, but I’m sure your new network will have more resources and suggestions. I’ve enjoyed parades (+music, +costumes, +energy!) in Rio de Janeiro (sort of off your route, these days), and Puerto Rico (many years ago), plus the Labor Day replay in Brooklyn, and the Memorial Day foggy version in SF. The tradition of transgression before Lent makes for a lively couple days of partying.

Judging from the pictures and your detailed and colorful descriptions, you are perhaps in the midst of a once in a lifetime experience that goes far beyond what you even imagined it would be. I am so incredibly jealous while at the same time thrilled for you :) Keep the updates and pictures rolling in while the rest of us slave away in our offices and cubicles.

In the mean time, I’ll be perusing flights to Europe this summer and will plan on meeting up with you in the The Azores in late June, early July. Saw Wes yesterday at Kathy Dykeman’s birthday party and he said he may be coming along with me next summer too. . . .You are both, of course, in everyone’s thoughts and we all send our warmest wishes.

Cougar’s Update

David, we have been active in the transfer market, and managed to bring in some fairly good young players. Our opening game was yesterday. Although we lost 3-1, the result does not reflect the effort and promise the team is showing. I think we’ll gell within a few weeks and get some positive results this season.

Well my friends, some of us actually have WORK to do!

Interestin that all the folks that you are meeting are older…Im guessing most wait till they are retired to live out their life long dream of sailing and exploring…and dont have as much energy as they might had they been a bit younger….I think its great that you guys are doing it now…Im sure you will meet some really interesting characters out there on the seas…and some life-long friends…Glad to hear you are getting into the groove of it all, just make sure that when Tni has dance party USA that she invites some of the crazy coots around! Thanks for such an informative and well written blog! Its nice to read all the details of whats going on during a normal sailing day for you guys….Sounds like you are really enjoying Rosario, and she is holding up to all your expectations!
Are you heading to Ft. Lauderdale today…I spent some time there when I was younger, my Grandparents lived there for a long time….so have some fond memories of visiting them…
I hope the rainy days let up for you and the sun smiles down on you!

Hey Guys!
Well it is really exicting to see the photo’s of your new pad, and realize that you are on your way and that the adventure has become a reality!
I cant believe you are off and sailing!
Sounds like all has been smooth so far, and you are getting used to the boat. How was the first sail? Are you guys at the new marina yet? Im glad the bed is cosy…thats a cute photo of Tni sleeping…was she really sleeping? ;) What has the weather been like? As usual, SD is warm, we finally had rain the other day…and I was in heaven, then the next day it was warm and sunny again…so I will just have to get my fix of cold in Minnesota next week, where we are spending Thanksgiving with Gerry’s family.
Im excited to read about all your adventures, and am so happy for you both! Looking foward to more pic’s and blogs! Lots of love, Alison
