Colombier

Posted by Tni Newhoff on March 22nd, 2007

After our bumpy ride from St. Martin we were thrilled to arrive at the beautiful, semi-secluded anchorage of Colombier on the northwestern coast of St. Barts. While in St. Martin we were anchored in a lagoon which did not allow us to swim off the back of the boat, [...]

Monte: “St. Martin or Bust!”

Posted by Tni Newhoff on March 19th, 2007

I just had to add that on our short but treacherous journey from St. Martin to St. Barts, Monte (the dinghy, not the person) decided that he was not ready to leave St. Martin and attempted to make his way back. I happened to be gazing at the horizon [...]

BVI to St Martin

Posted by David Newhoff on March 18th, 2007

We had a very nice crossing from the British Virgin Islands to St. Martin, leaving at 4:00pm and arriving the next morning around 7:00am. Winds were favorable for the first 7 hours, so we enjoyed some great sailing. It was one of those rare passages of nice winds, [...]

Bubbles

Those who know me well know how much I love champagne. Those who know me even better know how much I love Ruinart champagne. It has been my favorite for years, it is the champagne that my husband proposed to me with, and sadly it has been absent [...]

My Husband the Watermaker

Posted by Tni Newhoff on March 17th, 2007

There are a lot of things that I envisioned would happen on this trip that have proved not to be exactly so. Perhaps they have ended up being some variation of my vision but many times, nowhere near. I thought we would be swimming off the back of the [...]

Exploring the North Sound

Posted by Tni Newhoff on March 10th, 2007

I have been having such a great time exploring the North Sound via the wonderful trails that snake all over the islands. Every run takes me to some amazing summit and I usually have the trails all to myself. We’ve spent a lot of time at the Bitter End [...]

More Time in the North Sound

Posted by Tni Newhoff on March 7th, 2007

We had hoped to leave the BVIs with Aurora headed for St. Martin on Tuesday, but we didn’t get the weather window that we needed. It has been quite some time since this has been an issue given that we have been traveling to islands in such close proximity [...]

Sunday morning in Cane Garden Bay

Posted by Tni Newhoff on March 5th, 2007

We awoke this morning to the wonderful sounds of church music. We peeked out of our bedroom hatch to find that there were baptisms going on on the beach. A group of people were in the water and the rest sang along the shore. It was refreshing to catch [...]

A Very Old Distillery

Posted by David Newhoff on March 4th, 2007

Today we visited a two hundred year old rum distillery in Cane Garden Bay, Tortola. We were struck by the texture of the the heavily worn machinery and the incredibly old building. During their production season they bottle about 25 gallons a day.
The simplicity of the process and ingredients [...]
